Memory controller and graphics engine are already build in Intel CPUs, but the company's engineers are constantly looking for ways to improve the integration of the functional unit in the computer. At IDF 2012 Intel CTO Justin Rattner expressed sympathy to the idea of combining in a single chip heterogeneous cores.
Such an approach is already in use by ARM holding and its partners. A prime example is NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with its layout 4 + 1 : This allows to save energy and reduce heat.
As recognized by Rattner, Intel like this ideology and , but the effectiveness of its implementation will depend on the operating system to work competently with heterogeneous processors. In the future, Intel also plans to actively use the architecture with a high degree of parallelism - Xeon Phi (Larrabee) in this respect is a typical example.
