At the announcement of Spider platform, which includes the video card series Radeon HD 38xx, not much attention was paid to the possibility of Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 3850 to work in CrossFire. The possibility of combining various video card based on single chip within CrossFire technology was declared by ATI for long time, but these configuration did not benefit from high efficiency .

It is known that the Radeon HD 3870 is close in performance to the Radeon HD 2900 XT .Associate tested the video card Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 2900 XT in CrossFire .

The system not only correctly recognize both video cards, but also increased the speed compared to a single Radeon HD 3870 or Radeon HD 2900 XT.

In The game World In Conflict, for example, using 1280 x 768 and the mode 2xAA / 16xAF the bundle of Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 2900 XT showed almost double increase in performance compared to a single graphics card Radeon HD 2900 XT. However, in the game Call Of Duty using 1920 x 1200 and 4xAA / 16xAF this union was about a quarter faster then single Radeon HD 3870.

Officially only HD 38xx support crossfire X configuration (mixing Deferent HD 38XX cards). Just sell your card now and wait a bit then get two HD3870 for (under 160$ eac - after next AMD price drop , should be in next month ).
