With Catalyst 8.1 drivers it is possible to associate a Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 3850 in CrossFire regime. As showed the first tests, speed increase was acceptable. Here is the CrossFire of two video card Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 3850, which were installed in motherboard on base of Intel X38 chipset.
The crossfire made from Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 3850 normally scales the speed relative to single video card , sometimes it is just inferior to two Radeon HD 3870.
