We often meet motherboards which have several PCI express x16 slots. In this case rarely all these slots work at full speed, usually they are limited to the regimes PCI express x8, PCI express x4 or even PCI express x1 speed. Similar limitations are dictated by the chipset possibilities : the northern bridge is capable to support a limited quantity of PCI express lines.
In this case the PCI express x16 slot can work at the lowered speed, even if technical obstacles from the chipset side do not exist. There is some information about gigabyte motherboards on base of integrated chipset Intel g41/G43/g45 with PCI express x16 slot , which works only in the regime PCI express x4.
Gigabyte company at least does not hide this fact from users , mentioning about the operation mode of PCI express x16 slot in its official site. Furthermore, there is a list of video card compatibility , which report that not all graphic cards can work in these motherboards . A drop in PCI express x16 capacity by four times negatively affects the video card speed , but this relates generally to expensive high end graphical solutions, which in practice rarely meet cheap motherboards .
